Making it my Own

Updated: Nov 17, 2023

You’ve heard me write about how people showcase themselves with embroidery and the ways people can go about this. There are moments where even I have wondered, what can I do to make a garment special? What can I add that is my own? It can be hard to think at times as you may have too many or too little ideas. Let’s break down some good ideas for personalization.

Names

A simple, yet cute idea is name embroidery. Adding your name to something makes it distinctly your own. This doesn’t mean it has to be your regular name, but it can also be a name that is meaningful to you. Many people like to place a nickname on their left

chest or the back of their jean jacket. Couples can make a cute and unique matching set of anything they desire. This can be done by placing their initial or special dates anywhere on a garment. Their special embroidery can be showcased in places so that others can see the symbol of their love or can be placed more discreetly. Names are also a great way to remember special dates, loved ones, and pets. To show off embroidery, we’d recommend the chest area (left, right, or center) and the back. For keeping the special secret, sleeve cuffs or the bottom of the garments. Some other ideas include:

  • Social Media Username

  • Family Name

  • Team Name

  • Monograms

  • Pet names

  • Funny Phrases

Designs

Creativity comes in many forms. Creating a design is a great way to express that creativity. These designs can come in the form of drawings, graphic designs, and symbols. Drawings come to life on caps and jackets. We have seen from dolphins to aliens to skulls on fire here at the shop. Unique designs and color schemes can make a garment shine. Nothing extremely fancy is necessary. Symbols show great meaning. Matching hearts on sweaters can show the love people two people have for each other. Matching diamonds on different shirts can show the family aspect of friendship with each being a varying color to show people’s unique personality. Matching is not a requirement, any symbol on one person has a personal meaning to that person. A crown can be used to symbolize a birthday or feeling like a princess. A dog bone can show you’ve got a furry friend at home. A pair of scissors can show off your crafty side. The possibilities are endless.

Heat Transfers

A picture is worth a thousand words. Pictures are a great way to show people you care. This can be from a special loved one, groups of people, or a pet. They can be big on the shirt or small. Sizes vary depending on the photo and need. Wording can be added to make something memorable. Birthdays, anniversaries, and special occasions are great for heat transfer photos.

Heat transfers also work well with smaller designs with backgrounds or borders. Anything you can print on a page can be placed on a shirt. There is a size maximum of about 8 ½ by 11 inches.

Pets

Pets have been mentioned before here, but I’ve got more ideas up my sleeve. One of my favorites is pet embroidery. People can bring in a photo of their loving animals to be embroidered onto sweaters, shirts, blankets, etc. They can also be a symbol or outline which can be placed just about anywhere. This is a great way to keep your best friend close to you. You can also customize your pet’s favorite sweater with their name or a symbol of a favorite item (for example: bone).

I hope these ideas can help you get inspired for your next embroidery project. It can be hard to find a place to start in a world full of possibilities. These are good places to start brainstorming on how to create something that is your own. Happy creating!
