SpaceX Chooses Mr. Stitch for the Inspiration4 Super Bowl Patch
Updated: Sep 5
One of the more unusual patch projects to come through our Sherman Oaks shop was connected to Inspiration4, the SpaceX mission introduced to millions of football viewers during Super Bowl LV in 2021. Our part was creating the embroidered Inspiration4 patch seen in the campaign.
At the time, Inspiration4 had just been announced. The plan was to send four civilians into orbit aboard SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft later that year, so seeing something made in our shop connected to that campaign was pretty memorable for us.

The Inspiration4 Super Bowl Project
The Super Bowl spot introduced Inspiration4 as the first all-civilian mission to orbit. The commercial was directed by Bryce Dallas Howard, narrated by Octavia Spencer, and included close-up shots of a SpaceX flight suit and the Inspiration4 mission patch.
That close-up is what makes this project especially interesting from our side. A patch is a relatively small part of a much larger campaign, but when the camera comes in close, the shape, color and embroidery have to carry the identity clearly on their own.
Creating the Inspiration4 Patch at Mr. Stitch
The schedule was tight enough that our team worked through the weekend to get the patch made. Once the commercial aired, we were able to see the finished Inspiration4 emblem appear in the campaign we had been working toward.
For a shop that usually sees the finished piece before it leaves the counter, it is a different feeling to later spot that same embroidery in a national commercial. Projects like this are one reason we enjoy working with production teams, brands and creative departments around Los Angeles.
Take a look at the commercial below and keep an eye out for the Inspiration4 patch.

From a Super Bowl Commercial to Space
Seven months after the commercial aired, Inspiration4 launched from Kennedy Space Center on September 15, 2021 aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 and Dragon spacecraft. The four-person crew spent three days in orbit before safely returning on September 18.
That gives this little patch project a pretty unusual timeline: it started for us as an embroidery job connected to a Super Bowl campaign, and the mission behind that campaign eventually made it all the way to orbit.
Custom Patches for Commercial and Production Work
Not every patch project is going to end up in a Super Bowl commercial—and it does not need to. The same basic approach applies whether you need a patch for a commercial, film wardrobe, company apparel or another custom project: start with the artwork, intended size and where the patch will be used.
Our custom patches are made to order, so the shape, color and artwork can be planned around the project rather than forcing every design into the same format.

Need a Custom Patch for Your Project?
If you are working on a commercial, production, company project or something completely your own, send us the artwork and tell us how you plan to use the patch. We can look at the design with you and work out what makes sense for embroidery.
