Super Bowl Fan Project: Custom Embroidered Number Patches
Updated: 3 days ago
Super Bowl weekend always brings a little extra team rivalry into our Sherman Oaks shop. For this project, a customer came to us with a simple idea: create embroidered number patches they could wear while supporting a favorite player at the game.
The finished idea was especially fun because the patches did not end up on a jacket or jersey. They went on a pair of shoes.

A Number With Personal Meaning
The number mattered to the customer because it represented the player they wanted to support. That is one of the things we enjoy about one-off embroidery projects: sometimes a very simple design carries most of the meaning.
Fan gear does not always have to mean buying another jersey or T-shirt. A name, number or small embroidered detail can be enough to turn something you already own into part of your game-day outfit.
Putting the Patches on Shoes
The customer decided to use the number patches on a pair of shoes for the event. It was an unexpected placement, but that is what made the finished idea feel personal.
Shoes can be tricky because not every part of every pair can be embroidered directly. When direct embroidery is not practical, creating the artwork as a separate patch can give us another way to bring the idea to life.
That does not mean a patch will work on every shoe in exactly the same way. The shoe material, available space and attachment method still need to be considered before deciding how to finish the project.
If you are thinking about customizing footwear, our shoe embroidery guide explains when direct embroidery may work and when a patch can be another option.
Why a Patch Worked Well for This Idea
One advantage of a patch is that the embroidery is created as its own piece instead of being stitched directly into the item. That can be helpful when the placement is unusual or when the original item is difficult to position for embroidery.
Patches also give us room to work with the shape, border and thread colors as part of the design. For a simple number like this one, the patch itself becomes the whole visual.

Fan Gear Can Be More Personal Than a Jersey
If you are creating something for a game, watch party or another sports event, you do not always need a completely new outfit. Sometimes the personal part can be one small detail added to something you already like wearing.
That could be a favorite number, initials, a short name, a small symbol or another original design that means something to you. The important part is choosing an idea that still works clearly at the size and placement you have in mind.
Have an Unusual Placement in Mind?
This project is a good example of why it helps to show us the actual item when the placement is a little unusual. A design that is easy on a jacket or shirt may need a different approach on shoes, bags or another shaped item.
If you are local to Los Angeles, you can bring the item into our Sherman Oaks shop and we can look at the placement with you before deciding whether direct embroidery or a patch makes more sense.
A Small Detail That Made the Outfit Personal
This was not a complicated project, and that is part of what made it work. A meaningful number, an embroidered patch and an unexpected placement were enough to create something personal for Super Bowl weekend.
